COMPOSITION:
Cephalexin 250 mg in one filmtablet

ACTION:
Cephalexin is a broad-spectrum semi-synthetic antibiotic from the group of betalactam antibiotics - cephalosporins. It inhibits the biosynthesis of the bacterial wall of microorganisms, which has a bactericidal effect as regards almost all gram-positive microorganisms and a considerable number of gram-negative pathogenic microorganisms as: Shigella, Salmonella, E. coli, Proteus mirabilis, hemophilus, Klebsiells, etc. it influences also the penicillinaseproducing staphylococci.

PHARMACOKINETICS:
Cephalexin is distinguished for its good and fast absorption in the digestive tract, which is not affected by the food taken. After oral intake, the maximum plasma concentrations are attained after about 1 h, and it binds rather poorly to plasma proteins 15 %. It is eliminated through the kidneys and 90 % of the dose introduced is excreted up to the 8th in a biologically active form.

INDICATIONS:
Infections of the respiratory system, urogenital system, gastrointestinal tract, sepsis and infections of the joints, bones and soft tissues.

CONTRAINDICATIONS:
Hypersensitivity to antibiotics from the cephalosporin group.

SIDE EFFECTS:
Gastrointestinal disturbances: nausea, vomiting, stomachache, diarrhea. Usually allergic reactions are observed: urticaria, syndrome of Stevens-Johnson, anaphylaxia and angioedema. The following symptoms have been observed in predisposed patients: vaginal moniliasis, colpitis, arthralgia, eosinophilia, thrombocytopenia, neutropenia, intestinal nephritis and cholestatic icterus.

PRECAUTIONS:
It should be administered very cautiously to patients with hypersensitivity to penicillin.

DRUG INTERACTIONS:
Combined therapy of cephalexin with aminoglycosides, polymyxins and vancomycin enhances the nephrotoxicity of the drug. Acetylcysteine, chloramphenicol and phenylbutazon diminish the action of cephalexin, whereas acetazolamide and sodium bicarbonate enhance it.

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTARTION:
Orally administered to adults: 1 to 4 g for 24 h, divided into 2-4 intakes. When necessary, the maximum daily dose can reach up to 6 g. for children, the drug is dosed from 25 to 100 mg per kg body weight, divided into 3-4 intakes, at equal intervals.
