-
- COMPOSITION:
Quinine hydrochloride 50 mg; 200 mg in one dragee
ACTION:
Quinine is an alkaloid found in the bark of various species of the
quinine tree. Quinine hydrochloride contains 82 % quinine - base.
The action of quinine on the organism is versatile, manifested
mainly with changes in the functions of the CNS, cardiovascular
system and uterine muscles. By inhibiting the thermoregulatory
centers, it decreases body temperature in febrility. It reduces the
excitability of the cardiac muscle and prolongs the refractory
period. It manifests an anti-arrhythmic effect. It intensifies
uterine contractions. The drug can cross the placenta and penetrate
into the fetus, it stimulates intestinal peristalsis and can induce
meconium excretion. It is used in the treatment of malaria (very
rarely at present) due to its schizonticide action. It is eliminated
through the proximal renal tubules.
