COMPOSITION:
Piperazin adipinate 0.25 g in one tablet for children and
0.5 g in one tablet for adults

ACTION:
It exerts anthelmintic action on various nematodes, particularly in ascariasis and enterobiasis (invasion with Ascaris). It has an effect on both sexually mature and sexually immature forms of either sex. The agent blocks the neuromuscular synapses of the parasites and paralyzes their movement. Becoming flabby, they are excreted together with feces, pushed out by the normal peristalsis of intestines. The drug intensifies the tone and the contractions of the intestines. The excretion of nematodes can begin 8-10 h after the intake of the drug but the greatest part of the parasites are eliminated in the course of 2-3 days, even up to 4-5 days. The administration of the drug induces elimination of the parasites in 90-95 % of the cases, repeated intake can result in almost 100 % elimination. Piperazin administration requires a preliminary preparation of the patients or a special diet: laxatives are prescribed only in cases susceptible to constipation (in the evening before the intake of the drug).

INDICATIONS:
Invasion with Oxyuris and Ascaris. It is also effective in parallel invasion by the parasites.

CONTRAINDICATIONS:
Organic diseases of CNS, predisposition to convulsions, disordered renal function.

SIDE EFFECTS:
The drug is very slightly toxic and side effects are rarely observed after the administration of therapeutic doses. It can be prescribed to outpatients. Light nausea, abdominal pain, transitory headache can sometimes be observed. Overdosage may induce muscle weakness, dizziness, sleepiness, ataxia, accommodation disturbances. The side effects are gradually but completely eliminated after the discontinuation of the drug.

DRUG INTERACTIONS:
Extrapyramidal disorders are observed after simultaneous intake with phenothiazin neuroleptics.

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION:
In ascariasis - the drug is administered on two successive days, twice daily, 1/2-1 h after meals in the following doses: adults - 1.5-2 g per intake (3-4 g daily); children up to 1 year - 0.2 g per intake (0.4 g daily); from 2 to 3 years - 0.3 g per intake (0.6 g daily); from 4 to 5 years - 0.5 g per intake (1 g daily); from 6 to 8 years - 0.75 g per intake (1.5 g daily); from 9 to 12 years - 1.5 g per intake (3 g daily).

In enterobiasis - the same doses are prescribed in the course of 5 successive days; it is repeated after an interval of 7 to 12 days, and salien purgative is also prescribed.
