StockNo Product description
EB0280-444-07 PAPAVERINE HYDROCHLORICUM AMPOULE 1 ML (2%)

COMPOSITION:
Papaverine hydrochloricum 2 %, solution in ampoules of 1 ml

ACTION:
Papaverine is an opium alkaloid; it can also be obtained by synthesis. It possesses a myotropic spasmolytic action: decreases the tone and reduces the constrictive activity of the smooth muscles, mainly the arterioles (coronary, cerebral, pulmonary), widening them. The smooth muscles of the abdomen are less susceptible to its action, but in spasms the effect is pronounced. Papaverine slows down the nerve impulses along the bundle of the heart, its effect on the latter being similar to that of quinidine. The mechanism of action of papaverine is not yet fully elucidated; so far it is clear that it inhibits the enzyme phosphodiesterase and induces intracellular accumulation of cyclic AMP and binding of the calcium ions in the tendoplasmic reticulum.

INDICATIONS:
Papaverinum hydrochloricum is indicated for treatment of spasms of the blood vessels due to hypertension, angina, endarteritis, cerebral angiospasm of the smooth muscles of the organs in the abdominal cavity. It alleviates the bronchospasm caused by bronchial asthma.

SIDE EFFECTS:
Large doses can cause drowsiness and increased reflectory excitability. Long-term treatment with papaverine may result in constipation and other gastric disorders. (if taken orally).

DRUG INTERACTIONS:
Papaverine is synergic with some other spasmolytiocs and vasodilators.

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION:
Papaverinum hydrochloricum can be applied orally (as powder or solution), in the rectum, or by injection (subcutaneously, intramuscularly and intravenously). Subcutaneously: 0.04-0.06 g, up to several times daily. Intravenously: inject cautiously (danger of atrioventicular block, extrasystoles, rarely fibrillation) 0.01-0.04 g. it is better to be combined with other spasmolytics. Children over 6 months: 0.0003-0.02 g per dose, depending on the age.
