OXYTOCINUM
AMPOULE 1 ML/ 5 IU |
 |
-
- COMPOSITION:
Oxytocin 5 IU/ml in ampoules of 1 ml
ACTION:
Oxytocin is a synthetic polypeptide hormone equivalent in its
activity to the natural hormone oxytocin, but free of vasopressin,
heterogenic proteins and other impurities. Oxytocin acts selectively
on the uterine muscles, increasing their tone, and causing more
frequent contractions, especially during pregnancy and labor. The
action is due mainly to the influence on membranes of the myometrium
cells, increasing their permeability for potassium ions. Thus,
stimulation of the myometrium is increased. While oxytocin causes
rhythmic contractions of the uterine body, it relaxes and dilates
the cervix, thus preparing the delivery. Oxytocin also possesses
some lactogenic activity. It possesses a weak antidiuretic effect
and does not exert significant influence on the blood pressure. It
is well absorbed after either oral or nasal application. Oxytocin
reduces the transfer of drugs from mother to fetus during labor.
INDICATIONS:
Oxytocin is indicated for stimulating and provoking labor, if the
latter is slack during delivery of the fetus, due to atony of the
uterus. It could be used for artificial provoking of birth in cases
of overdue pregnancy or incomplete abortion. Oxytocin is also
indicated for enhancing lactation.
CONTRAINDICATIONS:
Disparity between the size of the fetus and the size of the pelvis;
incorrect position of the fetus (crosswise or sideways); presence of
uterine scars due to previous operations, threatening rupture of the
uterus. |
DRUG INTERACTIONS:
If Oxytocin is applied in combination with cyclopropane, severe
heart irregularity can be provoked; if Oxytocin is combined with
MAO_inhibitors, a rapid increase of the blood pressure may be
caused.
DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION:
After intravenous application, the effect is almost instantaneous,
while after intramuscular application it occurs later (within 3-5
min), but is more lasting. The therapeutic response to Oxytocin
reveals many individual differences. Hence treatment should start
with lower doses, possibly with infusion. During labor:
intramuscularly 1/2-2 IU, repeated, if necessary, 30-50 min later.
Doses for induction and stimulation of uteric contractions are
similar. In cases of atony after placenta delivery or Caesarian
section, 3-5 IU can be applied intramuscularly. In case of hypnotic
postnatal bleeding, 10-12 IU intramuscularly or intravenously can be
applied.
MEDICINAL FORM AND PACKAGE:
Ampoules of 1 ml, containing 5 IU, in packs of 10 or 50.
STORAGE:
At moderate temperature (15-30° C).
